My Costume

After a day of extensive shopping for my daughter’s wedding, I settled down on my bed when a thought crossed my mind, is it just me, or is everyone wearing a costume according to the role they play in this life.

On the stage during the wedding, everyone will look at me from their own perspective, my mom, my daughter, the bride’s mom, my sister, my friend, the groom’s mother-in-law, etc.. But that does not change who I am, who I have been or who I will be.

I will be wearing a 1-day old costume, but my soul is wearing this 48-year-old costume with which I am being identified. I recently came across an article where I read that each and everyone of us is a soul on a journey, and this journey has been going on for thousands of years, changing costumes every 100 years. It got me thinking about the concept of time. What is past, present and future. Are we all so focused on our recent costumes that we forget we have worn a lot of costumes and carry loads of baggage from our previous roles for which we have to undergo certain repercussions that we call Karma.

How many times have we wondered what I have done wrong to deserve this attitude, arrogance, and defiance from my spouse, my children, my parents, my siblings, my friends, and sometimes even strangers? If we dive deep into the time concept and travel back to a time unknown to us, we must have had several interactions with the same soul in a different costume. It’s the ripple effect, where you throw a stone in the water and the effect is felt in concentric circles increasing in diameter, showing us that the stone would have been long gone but the effect created by the impact is much greater.

So how do we make it stop? How can we cut the loop that has already been created? Is it possible to sever the soul connection that has been guiding our every action and reaction for the past so many centuries? Can we find peace at least now in this costume in this role?

When a soul is born in this new costume, it carries all the previous memories, which is why an infant shows all the emotions within the first few months. Happiness, sorrow, anger, frustration, agony, pain, etc…. Then slowly, through conditioning, the soul is moulded to fit into this costume. We all play the role assigned to the costume, forgetting that it’s just another costume and another role. We should all learn to unlearn.

Have we ever wondered how two kids born in the same family can be so different? Even identical twins are not identical humans. Let us think of ourselves as a vlog, recording our daily experiences and uploading them on a daily basis, and suddenly there comes a day when we have to change costumes and play a different role in the same vlog. Whatever we have recorded earlier cannot be deleted, but whatever we are going to play and record can be rectified to suit our will. Do we want that to be a happy vlog, a peaceful vlog filled with happy memories, or do we want it to be a sad, arrogant, and violent vlog filled with sad, unpleasant memories?

It is a choice to be made by each one of us, and the best way to disconnect ourselves from the bad karma is to forgive ourselves and others by asking for forgiveness in our minds for whatever role we played that caused the unpleasantness in the past. Everyone will have a justification of their own for their actions, what’s right to us need not be right to them, but we can definitely choose how we react or respond to it. Let us wear our costumes with dignity and peace. When the time comes to wear a different costume, let us leave this one behind with happy memories to be cherished by all the other souls on a journey. Let us vow to make stronger soul connections. I am ready to do it, are you?
